Best online master's programs in Japanese Studies

This intermediate Language Study Abroad (LSA+) opportunity is offered at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in the suburbs of Tokyo. Classes are taught for ten weeks from the middle of June to the middle of August. In addition to classroom instruction and activities with Japanese counterparts, Dartmouth students will experience intense immersion in the language through the stay program, in which they live with Japanese families. The group takes several trips to areas of cultural and historical interest, including a seven-day excursion to the Kyoto-Nara region.

The East Asian Languages and Cultures offers a PhD program in Japanese Language. The department only admits students into the PhD program. Students who do not have BA or MA degrees in East Asian Languages and Cultures (or Japanese) or in similar fields can be considered for admission. If admitted, these students are often required to make up deficiencies in their course work.

The program provides broad foundations and focused training in these two specialties, assuring that our graduates are amply prepared to teach and conduct research.
