The School of Literature, Media, and Communication Certificate in Film Studies allows for a concentrated focus on the art of film, concentrating in its four-course (twelve-hour) requirement on film technical, historical, and theoretical dimensions. It should appeal both to students interested in extending their technical education to an area where technology and art clearly converge and to those seeking to add to their understanding of the mediated environment we inhabit. After completing the ENGL 1101-1102 sequence, those pursuing the certificate fulfill the four-course requirement by taking two required courses, LMC 2500 Introduction to Film and LMC 3254 Film History, and two additional courses selected from among LMC 3252, 3256, 52, 3853, and 4500.

Film Studies now offers an comprehensive online version of our traditional certificate. Admission to all classes is open, and anyone can enroll. You do not have to be a UMass Amherst student. There is no admission procedure.

Courses in the certificate examine the history, theory, and criticism of cinema and study the medium of film as a global art, business, and technology of representation deeply informed by social dynamics of race, gender, sexuality, ability, and nation.

The Graduate Certificate in Film and Media studies provides a concentration in core film and media theory and history courses. This certificate is designed for graduate students whose research includes analysis of media text and technologies, and provides training in methodologies and a basic familiarity with critical and theoretical discourse, both historical and contemporary, in which film and media are discussed. Be sure to for graduation during their final semester of certificate coursework certificates cannot be granted retroactively.

This certificate is open to all graduate students enrolled at Bowling Green State University. Through this certificate program the student will explore the histories, theories, and practices of Performance Studies. The focus is on the relationship between text and practice performance as a reflection of society, a witnessing to an experience, or a challenge to social structures or ways of knowing emerging ideas of audience reception theory interdisciplinary connections with cultural studies, communication studies and U.S. global performance practices. Curriculum: Core Sequence (9 credits): THFM 6630 Introduction to Performance Studies (3) THFM 6680 Performance Studies (3) THFM 6660 Directed Research in Portfolio Development to serve as a capstone experience.
